Hellfire Fortifications?

So, there's this available quest in Honor Hold called Hellfire Fortifications, where you're supposed to capture some forts. I've been turning it down, because how on earth am I supposed to capture a fortification all on my own? I figured it was a PvP thing, and when I checked Wowhead I found I was right. But it doesn't appear to be a battleground or arena, exactly, and according to some of the comments there, really all you have to do is flag yourself for PvP and hang around in the fort until it says you've captured it. So I flew over to them, still not having accepted the quest, and didn't see anyone.

And I'm wondering, if I flag myself for PvP and go to hang around in the fort and it turns out to not be empty, but rather to be occupied by people who want to kill me, and I decide, for whatever reason, not to flee in terror, what do I do? I've never done PvP at all, so I'm totally not geared for it -- do I just figure to try to hold my own, die a lot, and hope for the best? Is there PvP etiquette I should know about or anything?
