Holy crap, it's been almost three weeks since I posted. D: Part of that is RL stuff getting in the way, but I think part of it is that I've just been sort of puttery and unfocused in WoW for the last little while (also probably due to the RL stuff).
Like for instance, Daniria, who is typically my favorite, I basically stopped leveling her for a while, not on purpose, I just didn't like the zones she was in. So instead I was taking her around Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms working on farming mats to level her leatherworking. Omg, breath of wind and globes of water, why so hard to find?! And I need to learn to read the Wowhead comments first, and save myself the trip if the mobs have been removed.
Anyway, we went to Winterspring for globes of water, and Tanaris for breath of wind. I didn't have much success there, so I went to Silithus to look for more -- stopping on the way to check the Ravasaur Matriarch's nest in Un'Goro Crater, and success! So now I have that up for auction, and will just bank it for a while if it doesn't sell.
Anyway, still no joy on breath of wind -- got two in Tanaris, none in Silithus (couldn't even find the mobs), bought four, and still need two more before I can make the Wildfeather Leggings I want to make. They're absolute crap for her class, but I kind of want to see how they look with the white leather jerkin she made -- crap for her level, but so pretty! I want to equip it with a white bandit mask and the wildfeather leggings and take a bajillion screenshots. Are there any pretty white boots?
Or I may do the sensible thing and either see who I know who can use them or sell them on the AH. God knows I don't want to have to farm breath of wind, ever ever again.
And of course, while farming, I'll get distracted. Sometimes by a thing or a quest, or sometimes by something I run across on Wowhead. I got distracted by the singing sunflower and sent her off to do the Zombies on your lawn quest to get one -- yay, she has a singing sunflower now! But that thing it does that looks like a buff but isn't, actually kind of annoys me, so I can only keep it out for a little while.
So then I thought, well let me clear out some of the quests that are piling up, so I sent her to Zangarmarsh to talk to the Cenarion Circle, and -- as I knew I would do but thought I would be able to stop myself -- cleared out that quest but picked up half a dozen more. So I spent a while trying to knock some of those off my plate, and that was actually pretty fun. I'm about three levels too high for the zone, but that's okay because it lets me stop and go fishing if I spot a tasty school without worrying that I'll die in an instant if someone notices me.
And I made a fishing outfit for her! consisting of blue overalls that Lyrie made for her, dusky boots that she made herself, and a loosely threaded hat. She looks adorable. Now I want to make different fishing outfits for all my alts. I just wish I could keep them in the tacklebox.
And then I started trying to sort out this "roleplaying" thing. :/ I'm not really temperamentally suited to it, because I'm naturally really introverted and anxious about ever getting anything wrong where a stranger can see me, but I'm curious, and want to try it. So my sister and I rolled some characters on Cenarion Circle, and I've got one of them in the Azeroth College guild (Tyshenda, Night Elf hunter) and one in Manus Ignota (Sheyna, human warrior).
I'm talking with some of the officers of Azeroth College about how best to recruit, because it's really small and there's usually no one else online when I am. Manus Ignota, on the other hand, is a super active and chatty group, and people seem to stay mostly IC in Guild chat. Which was strange for me and disconcerting, not that they were doing it but that I wasn't sure how to be in-character myself. I think I kept up okay and didn't mess up any potential backstory for the character (no backstory for her yet, and also, she's a human, which I am SO not used to playing, just looking at her is sort of weird for me), but it caught me a little off guard. I was just out questing around, you know, trying to level, and there's this whole IC thing going on in guild chat with people welcoming Sheyna and asking questions about her and and and.
I know I had a deer-in-the-headlights look on my face for most of the rest of the evening. I hope it didn't show too much in chat.
And then I rolled a character on Ravenholdt, which is an RP PVP server.
Yes, I, too, am looking at myself sideways and going WTF?
But okay, so here's my reasoning. I want to learn PvP, but I'm completely freaked out by the idea of doing so. I even came close to trying the other night. I had Daniria in Stranglethorn and happened by the Gurbashi Arena. No one was around, so I flew down and spoke to the NPC there, Stone Guard Towhide. I couldn't figure out exactly whether this would be NPC combat or PvP, so I left the arena, intending to go think about it, and as I was leaving, a level 85 druid whispered me to say I should come on in. I panicked and said, "oh, it's PvP isn't it? I just do PvE," and fled.
Embarrassed. Omg. Eeek. And also, why can't I do this? I should learn to do this.
So I thought, okay, RP servers typically have better reps as far as people wanting to be grown-ups and not generally being home to a huge percentage of random asshole griefers, so, point in their favor. And if the entire thing is world PvP, then I can figure it's totally the done thing! I can learn in an environment that was made for that, rather than -- as on a PvE server -- having to go in search of it when I don't have any clue what I'm doing.
So now I have a teeny little lowbie Night Elf hunter (level 6) on Ravenholdt. Kessian, if anyone plays there. Or would like to. :)
I mean, I still don't know what I'm doing. But I'm there!
I thought there was something else I wanted to talk about, but I can't remember what it was.
Probably just as well. :)

Date: 2011-06-27 06:12 pm (UTC)I would actually recommend against learning pvp by leveling on a pvp server. 9/10 gankers are at level cap or at least a lot higher than their targets, and you will not stand a chance against them because of gear and lowbie abilities. Go for random battlegrounds at your level, duel people wherever you can (duel other people who don't usually pvp, even) or if you want the full arena experience without trying the gear grind, I like to push a game called Bloodline Champions. It's got a couple big differences from warcraft arena, in that you have to aim (hit the feet, 's not hard) and in that there is no gear grind at all and a lot less abilities to learn. I did a big rec post for it on a different community a while back: here.
If you want to stick to warcraft pvp, look for video tutorials and gear guides, and be sure the check the dates to make sure you're getting accurate information. And understand that it's not exactly balanced, even at levelcap, but it is ABSOLUTELY not balanced below level cap. You can still have fun in spite of that 'course, and I hope you do. :)

Date: 2011-06-27 07:00 pm (UTC)Ahh! Okay, I get it now. Seems like a weird way to run it, but okay, at least I understand. :)
On the PvP front, it actually isn't the dying that bothers me. If someone higher level ganks me, okay, whatever, I don't really care. But something like battlegrounds, I honestly don't even know how they work. I mean, I know that you can queue up for them, and I know the theory -- class roles, and protect the healer, don't wander off alone, expect to die a lot -- but due to my Childhood Trauma[tm] I really want to know things like, what does the place look like, how is gameplay different from gameplay in PvE (seriously, the fact that there is such a term as "Raid UI" makes me more nervous than I can tell you, as it indicates that there are different interfaces for different circumstances, interfaces I may never have seen before), who calls the shots, how is that person chosen? Does anyone call the shots, or is it a free-for-all? Is there a different Chat channel for it? are you logged in automatically or do you have to /join? How many people are in the battleground at a time? I see references to 10v10, 2v2, and I'm like, crap, you mean I could be in a battleground where there's only a few people? SOMEONE WILL SEE ME FUCK UP. D:
So yeah, there's that. I'm working on getting better about not worrying about screwing up where anyone can see -- and I'm a whoooole lot better than I was a few years ago. :)

Date: 2011-06-28 12:09 am (UTC)These questions make me want to write up a from-a-newb-to-a-newb kind of intro to BGs. Hopefully a veteran will jump in after and add info, but I can start! But obviously I don't know all the questions I should be addressing. I can start with these...are there any others you have? Spam me with questions! I shall write up a post.

Date: 2011-06-28 03:09 pm (UTC)And what happens once you pick one? Do you just get dropped into an ongoing battle, or put into a queue to wait for a battle to start? If the latter, what happens while you're in the queue? Do you get to be in the battleground looking around while you wait for the battle to start? If the latter, is it super confusing to emerge into a battle? how do you figure out what's going on and what to do?
And how do you know when it's over? How long do they typically last? or do they ever end? is it just a perpetual game of Capture The Flag? What happens if you die and the battle ends before you can get back to your body?
That kind of thing. :)
You are awesome for tackling this! *hugs forever*
